Data Cleaning with OpenRefine for Social Science Data

Unfortunately, the workshop cannot take place as planned.

An important part of the data workflow is preparing data for analysis. This often involves data cleaning, where errors in the data are identified and corrected or formatting is made consistent.

This workshop introduces OpenRefine, a powerful free open-source tool for cleaning and transforming messy data. The focus is on practical application; participants bring their own laptops for hands-on exercises. The workshop uses material provided by the Data Carpentries (https://carpentries.org/). You will learn how to:

  • create, export and import a project in OpenRefine
  • view and work on subsets of rows using facets and text filters
  • reduce variations in data through clustering, bulk editing and transformations
  • undo and redo actions and export the history of actions
  • save cleaned data in a widely supported file formats

This is a hands-on workshop. Please bring your own laptop. Also, please make sure to install open refine and download the datafile before the workshop. You will find the links and instructions to do so here: https://datacarpentry.github.io/openrefine-socialsci/index.html

ORCID iD: How to set up your researcher profile and make the most of it

ORCID iD is a persistent identifier of researchers. As the global standard for researcher identification, an ORCID iD ensures your work and publications are accurately attributed to you throughout your career.

In this webinar we will focus on the practical use of the ORCID iD. You will learn:

  • how to create and correctly set up your profile,
  • how to add research outputs, affiliations, etc.
  • how to link your profile to other tools
  • how to automatically update your profile

Legal Aspects of Research Data Management

What legal considerations must be taken into account in the process of data generation, analysis, storage, and publication? The workshop focuses on materials research and, in this context, specifically on the publication of data. What licensing models are available, and what must be considered when using data from other sources?

Data Discussion & Dessert - “Sustainable RDM - Data Efficiency and Data Minimization”

Every stage of the research data lifecycle consumes resources. Whether it’s data collection and analysis or storage and publication – energy is always consumed and computing power expended. At the same time, data management doesn’t happen in a vacuum: all around us, the consequences of a human-made climate crisis are becoming increasingly evident.

So how can we ensure that we, as data managers, act in an environmentally responsible manner? How can good research data management make our scientific community more sustainable? What do we need to consider when selecting, for example, cloud systems and data centers so that they are particularly resource-efficient? How can we organize ourselves within our research communities to advocate for science-based climate policy?

That’s exactly what the next edition of “Datengespräche & Dessert” will focus on, so come join us! There will be a short introductory talk followed by plenty of time for informal conversations over coffee and snacks.

„Data Discussions & Dessert“ is a periodic networking and exchange forum for all those who support researchers in Dresden in dealing with research data. Whether you are a data manager, an employee in INF projects, a data steward or a contact person for your working group – here you have the opportunity to exchange ideas across institutions and departments with people who are facing similar questions and challenges. Organized in cooperation with the Service Center for Research Data of SLUB and TU Dresden. It is open to all interested people!

Introduction to Data Protection and Privacy

Data protection and privacy concerns everyone, and handling personal data poses particular challenges for researchers: Under what conditions may personal data be processed? What requirements must be met, and what strategies can be used to securely store, process, share, and retain personal data? This workshop provides an introduction to the key aspects of data protection and privacy and is primarily aimed at researchers.

  • Date: November 2, 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Location: Zoom
  • Language: German
  • Registration open until October 28, 2026: https://terminplaner.dfn.de/public/bookings/f5dd4283-f8e8-4c36-8c81-488c601f97cd

Data Organisation in Spreadsheets for Social Science Data

Tabular data in spreadsheets is widely used. It is often entered and formatted in a way that makes it easy for the human eye to read. However, in order to perform accurate analyses and visualizations of tabular data, or to process it further using programming languages such as R or Python, the dataset should first be cleaned and organised according to tidy data principles.

The workshop introduces the tidy data principles and best practices of dealing with data in spreadsheets. Using a social science data set as example, participants will immediately apply those in practical exercises. The workshop uses material provided by Data Carpentry (https://carpentries.org/).

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Good data entry practices – formatting data tables in spreadsheets
  • How to avoid common formatting mistakes
  • Approaches for handling dates in spreadsheets
  • Basic quality control and data manipulation in spreadsheets
  • Exporting data from spreadsheets

This is a hands-on workshop. Please bring your own laptop. Also, please make sure to download the datafiles and install a spreadsheet program on your device before the workshop. You can find the instructions and links to do so here: https://datacarpentry.github.io/spreadsheets-socialsci/#setup-instructions

Research Data Management for Linguistics

This workshop provides a practical introduction to RDM for linguists. It begins by presenting the key fundamentals of RDM (data lifecycle, FAIR and CARE principles). Building on this foundation, the workshop then discusses best practices for RDM in the field of linguistics. Together we will examine typical challenges in working with linguistic research data, including personal data, ethical issues, complex data dependencies, and a lack of standardization.

JupyterLab + AI Assistant as Research Data Management Workbench

Research data rarely arrives clean: inconsistent formats, missing values and undocumented columns slow down analysis and make results hard to reproduce or share. In this one-day training (10:00–16:00), researchers get introduced to JupyterLab and Python with an integrated AI assistant and learn to use it as a reproducible workbench for data exploration and RDM tasks. Working with a realistic messy dataset, you will explore it, validate it against explicit rules, generate a quality report, clean it, and publish it as a documented FAIR data package with a draft Data Management Plan. Throughout, you let the AI draft according code and docs while you learn to read, run and critically check what it produces.
