Data Cleaning with Open Refine for Social Science Data

An important part of the data workflow is preparing data for analysis. This often involves data cleaning, where errors in the data are identified and corrected or formatting is made consistent.
This workshop introduces OpenRefine, a powerful free open-source tool for cleaning and transforming messy data. The focus is on practical application; participants bring their own laptops for hands-on exercises on a dataset from the social sciences. The workshop uses material provided by the Data Carpentries (https://datacarpentry.github.io/openrefine-socialsci/index.html) and covers the following topics:

- create, export and import a project in OpenRefine
- view and work on subsets of rows using facets and text filters
- reduce variations in data through clustering, bulk editing and transformations
- undo and redo actions and export the history of actions
- save cleaned data in a widely supported file format
