Data Organisation in Spreadsheets for Social Science Data

November 4 @ 10:00 - 12:45

Tabular data in spreadsheets is widely used. It is often entered and formatted in a way that makes it easy for the human eye to read. However, in order to perform accurate analyses and visualizations of tabular data, or to process it further using programming languages such as R or Python, the dataset should first be cleaned and organised according to tidy data principles.

The workshop introduces the tidy data principles and best practices of dealing with data in spreadsheets. Using a social science data set as example, participants will immediately apply those in practical exercises. The workshop uses material provided by Data Carpentry (https://carpentries.org/).

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Good data entry practices – formatting data tables in spreadsheets
  • How to avoid common formatting mistakes
  • Approaches for handling dates in spreadsheets
  • Basic quality control and data manipulation in spreadsheets
  • Exporting data from spreadsheets

This is a hands-on workshop. Please bring your own laptop. Also, please make sure to download the datafiles and install a spreadsheet program on your device before the workshop. You can find the instructions and links to do so here: https://datacarpentry.github.io/spreadsheets-socialsci/#setup-instructions
